Hundreds of Catholic school students joined instruments on March 18 at the 2008 Area Band concert in the Bueter Gym at Lexington Catholic High School. The audience packed the bleachers and were rewarded with musical selections of "Cartoons and Classics" that included favorite animated themes from the Flintstones, Scooby Doo, the Simpsons, and much more.
The concert featured students in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades from Christ the King, Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary, Saint Agatha, Sts. Peter and Paul, and Seton Catholic, along with the Concert and Jazz Bands and Percussion Ensemble from Lexington Catholic.
Just the mechanics of the concert were impressive. The mighty array of musicians spread out over the entire gym floor, with band directors Allison Weitkamp, Brad Kerns and Laura Fritz zippping from band to band to conduct the different pieces. Helpful crew members kept the percussion and music stands moving to the right spots in an amazingly efficient fashion. Students from each band introduced each number and gave the audience some background information about the composition and some tips about what to expect (or an invitation to join in, as in the case of the big "Sponge Bob Square Pants" number).
Thanks to all the students and their band directors for such a great show. As the cartooon character says "See ya next time!"
