Seton students enjoy Art, Geography, Movement and more with Flat Stanley

Here's another report about bringing art and other subjects together to enrich a learning experience. This report from the field comes to us from Alison Clendenen, art teacher at Seton Catholic School:

On Tuesday, February 26th, Seton Catholic Students in Kindergarten and First Grade experienced a “Reading Road Trip” with book character Flat Stanley.

Attentive students and parents were entertained with the book Flat Stanley by author Jeff Brown. The book was read by a volunteer who portrayed an older, grown-up Flat Stanley who shared his experiences as a boy.

After listening to the story, groups of students rotated to the art room where they could use their imagination with art teacher Mrs. Alison Clendenen. They colored a Flat Stanley template to mail to friends or family members. They also joined Ms. Sky Hedman in the technology classroom where she showed them how to use Google Earth to locate the area where their mailed Flat Stanley would travel. Then students participated in a Flat Stanley phys ed activity with P.E. teacher Mrs. Julie White

At the end of the “Reading Road Trip,” students were able to shop for books at the school’s annual book fair with librarian Mrs. Melissa McIntosh. School counselor Ellie Durbin involved the school’s student council in serving as guides who helped parents take their children from activity to activity, and Mrs. Riddell’s Third Grade class created giant Flat Stanley characters to display on the doors of each activity room.

A great time was had by all!
